Rugby.

Dear Granddad,
At school for the next 2 weeks I'm doing a Melbourne Storm Rugby clinic. I played a game of Touch Rugby. It was really fun!
Could you tell me when you played Rugby.
From Sam.

  1. Grandad began playing rugby a long time ago and kept it up for a long time too, playing in Adelaide and Tasmania.
The first time he and I ever saw each other was when I was watching a match and he was playing.
Then he was a referee for a while and later, played touch rugby.
He is out tonight at a rugby club meeting at the very first club he ever played for.
I hope you don't mind my answering this but Granddad will be able to tell you a lot more about it anyway.
    Love
    Grandma x

    1. Dear Grandma,
Grandad thought my passing was amazing with a Rugby ball!

    2. Hi Sam
Granddad has ben talking to me this week about your excellent ball passing skills - he is very impressed by them. He also loved having you with him to see his old club team playing - nice photo on your Mum's blog.

How was the experience of going with your Dad and friends to a rugby match in a big stadium?

It was lovely to have you all visit last week but we missed you afterwards because the house seemed so empty without you.

Must go - tell Emily I am just about to make another lasagne - to take to a lunch with about fifteen people with whom I used to work a long time ago - when your Mum was at high school!

      Bye for now
      Love Grandma

  2. Howdy Sam,
I first played rugby when I was going to Pennington Primary School, some time about 1955 - it was just kid's stuff, the rugby pitch has a track going diagonally across it; the "club-shed" was a shed, made of rusty corrugated iron, no floor, just dirt (even where the shower was).
In 1963, the first year after I left school, a friend, Dennis Reese, said he played Rugby for Port Adelaide - I went with him and joined the Under 16 Team (I was 16 years old, at the time, but it did not seem to matter). The coach put me on the wing, a place in the team where a lot of new players are put, so the coach can check them out for how good they are. I could run fast, but I was put in the front row of the scrum (a great possie, plenty of action) where I seemed to do a good job.
The year after that, I played in the Under 18's - and then, in 1965, I played half the season for the Club's "B" Grade, after which I went to the "A" Grade.
In the "A" Grade, I had a couple of years as a front-row forward (loose head prop [I will tell you all about that when I am at your place]). I was changed from a prop forward to a wing-forward, or what is known as a "Break-away", my favorite position of all. My last year of playing was for a club in Tasmania, where I was put as an outside centre (another long story I will tell you about when I get to Geelong).
Take care Sam, I hope you have fun when you play sport.
    Lots of love,
    Grandad. XXX OOO ---
